So I decided to do an experiment. Starting with a full hydroponic tank, I measured the amount of water I was needing to top it up with every time I topped up over the course of a month.
So how much water does hydroponic growing actually use? On average, my x litre hydroponic reservoir needed topping up by x ml each week.
What size reservoir do my hydroponic plants need?
[something]
How often do I need to top up the reservoir?
There's no hard and fast rule about how often you should top up the water for your hydroponic plants. Indeed there are so many factors that affect the rate at which the water disappears that one size doesn't fit all/there will always be a judgement to make/you'll need to take a bespoke approach/blueprint.
I find that topping up water little but often is the key to happy hydroponic plants. I try to check the water in my hydroponic tank daily and normally end up topping up every other day. That's with mature, rapidly growing plants. In the early stages when the seeds were just starting to sprout, I didn't need to top up the water nearly as frequently. At that stage, a top up once a week would have been enough.
As a rule of thumb, you should always try to keep your hydroponic tank as near to full as possible. However, there are a couple of signs to look out for which will tell you that it's definitely time to add some more water:
- Plant roots are exposed.
- etc.
It's also important to flush out the hydroponic tank from time to time and replace all of the water with fresh water. Read my article on [Hydroponics: how often to change the water] to find out more about that.
Why do I need to keep the water topped up?
[something]
What happens if I forget to top up the water?
[something]
What type of water should I use to top up?
It's important to make sure that you're using the right type of water for your hydroponic plants, but most of the time tap water will be fine.
However, here are some types of water that you shouldn't use in your hydroponic tank:
- Softened water
- Nutrient water
- Etc.
Water temperature is also an important consideration. Adding water that's too cold will shock the plants and water that's too warm could cook the roots.
In an ideal world, the temperature of the water to be added to the hydroponic tank should be the same as the temperature of the water already in the tank.
In an indoor set up, that will probably mean that the water should be room temperature.
I usually let water sit at room temperature for 24 hours before using it to top up.
